[fic] Power Rangers: Genesis

Power Rangers in Space: Stronger

digifaith

Title: Genesis
Fandom: Power Rangers RPM
Rating: G
Wordcount: 627
Completion Date: June 5, 2009
Summary: One needs to come back to himself, another needs to move beyond herself, and the third needs to see himself differently in relation to the world, and we all need them to make the right choice.
Author's Notes: No, I haven't given up writing; I've been too busy watching this series, and having writer's block.

It was only by long habit that he didn't laugh in disbelief, or ask that the question be repeated. It was a soldier's duty not to question, but there was no way he could accept this, because the honor didn't belong to him, and neither did the responsibility -- but there they both were, in the lieutenant's outstretched hand, waiting to be taken up.

Scott thought to protest as his brow slowly furrowed in a frown; surely they misjudged him, overestimated his capabilities. After all, how worthy could a man be, when he couldn't even save his own--

The colonel interrupted his thoughts almost as if he had spoken aloud. "Marcus would have wanted it this way."

After a moment's heavy pause, Scott closed his mouth and, in the act of doing so, began to understand. It didn't matter whether he felt worthy.

"Alright. To finish what he started, I'll do it."

~

"You must be mistaken!" "You can't seriously mean to--" "We need her here with us!" "Go find someone else to play your little--" "Our little girl is not going to--"

Despite her parents' talking over each other, more incensed by the second, Summer felt strangely alone with her thoughts and the black and yellow device proffered by the uniformed man before her. Hands jammed in her pockets, she sidestepped away from her father's wildly gesticulating hands and her mother's nervous fidgeting, and really thought.

Playing hero was all well and good, when it was a spur-of-the-moment act of defiance, the plaything of a sheltered girl who liked feeling important, but committing to risk her life whenever needed for a city of people who might not even care about her?

"She doesn't owe you people anything!" "You may think she's just what you need, but you don't know her like we do!"

In surprising clarity, Summer pictured Andrews; then, meeting the eyes of the uniformed man, gave a brief, decisive nod.

~

"You mean, be a superhero?" In days gone by, it might have been his dream come true, but now it just made Flynn wary. "What, so I can follow your rules and, I don't know, advance your public image?"

It was perhaps a rude question to ask a lady, but he had to know; the straight-backed woman was, however, unfazed. "You will not be under military control, but will be an independent unit in the direct service of the people of Corinth."

Until the military decided it had a use for him. Wasn't that how organizations always worked, concerned with aiding others only as far as the acts were beneficial to the actors? Gather up enough people, and ulterior motives would always take over -- wouldn't they?

Flynn started as his dad clapped a heavy hand on his shoulder. "Sounds like this is just the superhero you need." His voice was cheerful, almost strained, in the manner of a man who has recently acknowledged a great mistake and resolved to do better.

For a moment Flynn's gaze focused into space, but his dad's hand anchored him firmly in the present. Only half bidden, a winsome grin stole over his features. "Well then, it seems the people of Corinth just found themselves a new servant."

~

"They all agreed? Good. Send them here immediately, and we will proceed with the Ranger Series activation." A pause was punctuated by the rhythmic tapping of a pencil on a desktop. "Well, they will have to be enough, won't they, Colonel? You must believe in them. Without faith, we will truly have nothing left, and they will have no chance."

The transmission's ending beep was followed by a barely audible sigh, and then the sharp clicks of a keyboard echoed through the room once more.

Aaahh, you posted this in the_rpm_garage about a second before I hit the post button on my introductory entry there. D: Freaky.

Anyway, on to the fic. Very interesting. This is definitely a subject that I've wondered about myself. I think the motivations you've given them here are very true to the characters... and I have to confess, I got a little teary eyed at Flynn's part. (I love the image of his father as "a man who has recently acknowledged a great mistake and resolved to do better".) All in all, a really nice glimpse at a big gap in the canon!

Haha, nice to meet you! :D

I really love that we got such nice little packages of backstory for each Ranger; it gives a writer so much to work with. <3 Anyway, I have a soft spot in my heart for Flynn's dad, so I'm glad you liked my portrayal of him. Thanks for the feedback!

Hey, Welcome to the Garage.

I enjoyed your story, particularly the parts about Flynn's dad and Summer's parents.

Oh, and I can't believe I forgot to mention your awesomezord journal theme.I got a DS just because I really wanted to check out this Phoenix Wright game I saw on the shelf at a games store. I had just traded in a lot of old systems and games, oh and I think it was just about the time when Super Legends had been announced.
But Phoenix Wright Whoo! /grin

Yay Phoenix Wright! I, also, got a DS for the sole purpose of playing those games. *g* I'm really excited for Edgeworth's game, I heard it's supposed to reach the U.S. in January.

I love the word "awesomezord".

Hee, thanks! I'm really loving all of these characters, and I hope I'll get plenty of inspiration for more stories in the future.

This was a great fic! I've wondered how the original three were chosen to be rangers and this was a nice little snippet into that time period. I really enjoyed it, especially the throwback to K's pencil from Gem and Gemma. Awesome job!

Aww, thanks! I've always sort of wondered what the original three did before they became five, and it was fun taking a look at this time period. Glad you enjoyed!
